Salt dissolves and could mark your stone. It would also insure that the dogs would be licking at the seams (so to speak).

I would have suggested laying heavy narrow strips of tar paper or black vinyl down prior to setting the stone, but that may be impractical now.

Consider making sure that the seams are deep enough and put in a light layer of "poison" that has the least toxicity and cover it with the tight packed sand. This should stop the growth at its source and still protect your pets.

There are a number of shellacs, etc. on the market to put a gloss on the stones, but they will all require maintenance. Also in extreme low temperatures a heavy coating has been known to trap water that freezes and cracks the stone.
