Interior wall in humming (scary)

For the last several weeks, an interior wall in our basement (right behind a bathroom) has been humming...it sort of sounds like an airplane. At first we thought it was our freezer, but when you put your hand on the wall, it definitely vibrates. The sound comes and goes...in an hour, it must occur at least 50 times and is about 15 seconds in duration. We are getting scared. Not knowing too much about electrical or motors, we are afraid we'll burn up in the middle of the night with a house fire. We can't figure it out, and the access for the wall is through one of those ceilings where you push up some foam type squares. Any ideas...anybody?! Please help! Thank you.
