Lawnmower Engine Hard Starting

Posted By: John
Monday, 27 March 2000, at 7:37 a.m.

I have a 2 yr old Sears mower that has a 6.75hp 4 cycle engne with about 150 hrs on it.

I have just brought it out for the 2000 mowing season (I am in Canada, just north of Seattle) and am having problems starting it. It has trouble getting started - it will run slowly after priming but stops as soon as the primed gas runs out. After a half dozen of so attempts, it starts and then takes a minute or so to get up to speed. Then it runs ok.

To avoid possible confusing symptoms, I replaced the plug and the air filter.

It seems to running too lean at startup.

The only thing I can think of is that it appears I left some fuel in it for 3 months over the winter. Only a small amount (a few ounces), but it may have gummed up the carb. If that is the case, is there anything I can do short of having someone rip the carb off? I like fixing things myself so am not afraid of trying things.

Any help would be appreciated
