Sewer system

I have an older home with a cast iron sewer outfall running from the house to the city service. Wastewater from the laundry room backs up from an open drain in the basement floor some distance from the laundry room. I suspect that the back flow valve is either not there or not working properly. This may be compounded by the fact that tree roots may be entering the old sewer line approximately 20 feet from the house. I am looking for alternative ways of correcting the problem other than digging up and replacing the old pipe.
