In Response To: building stairs (Steven T. Smades)

I would really recommend hiring a carpenter for ths one, or at the very least purchasing a book on carpentry that has detailed illustraions.

The fact is, that building steps and cutting raftersare the two most complicated processes in carpentry. Not for the novice, and too complcated to exlain in detail via the net.

You also need to build the stairs to strict prevailing building codes in your area that regulate riser heighs, tread depths, handrail heights, baluster spacings...

In the event a guest has an accident on your stairs, and you have not built them to strict code guidelines, you could find yourself without liability insurance covrage and on the short end of a lawsuit.
