A Handyman Helping Hand

I'm putting in a new bathroom shower and I am uncertain about how to install the water valve for the shower. I have 2X4's on the wall. I will be using sheet rock on the walls. I need to know how to position the shower control. I was afriad it would be sticking out too far or not far enought from the wall. Any suggestions would be appriciated. Thank You
