In Response To: Fireplace Hearth Stain (Micki)

Micki,

Darn husbands!:-) Depending on the type of stone that is involved it is pretty likely that you will be able to get the stain out if you wish. You might consider leaving the stain as a conversation piece!

I can't think of any type of stone that you couldn't use any normal household cleaner, or possibly hair shampoo (good at grease removal) that would harm the stone. BUT!!, any time you are trying to clean anything.. it is best to try an out of the way place first to make sure you don't get undesireable results. I would try the hair shampoo on a damp sponge myself....

Beyond that you get into using acids that will for sure take the stain out.. but may very well etch the stone in such a manner that the cure is worse than the original problem! If mild household cleaners don't do the trick.. spend some time calling local stone masons and ask specific questions about the type of stone involved and what type of acid in what concentration would be best suited for the job...
