Hardwood floor leaks?

Our 50 year old home is 11/2 stories with a full basement. When we bought it, just over a year ago, we removed the carpet on the main level to expose the finished hardwood floors. We have been thoroughly enjoying them until recently, when we began to notice what appear to be water stains on the floors along the walls. There has never been a palpable dampness or standing water, but rather, a uniform darkening of the wood along the walls, as if water is seeping in from outside. We can't determine how this could happen though, since the floors are above ground level. We have also noticed some "spreading" or gapping of the planks. In the garage and unfinished portion of the basement, we can see uniform "streaking" in the wood, as if water is running down through the planks of the floor above. Again though, there is no noticable leak. Since we don't even know what sort of contractor we should call to consult, any help or suggestions anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Much thanks!
