In Response To: squeaky floors (Matt Wilcox)

Check out www.1fmn.com/hdsite/howtos/stop_floor_squeaks/allsteps.html.This site talks a lot about repairing squeaks. I have a two-story colonial with a few squeaks on both floors. The squeaks on the first floor I fixed by locating the squeaks and then glueing and screwing a 2 x 6 into the beams and then up into the floor itself. I used 6# x 2" dryewall screws. It's been about a year and still no more squeaks on the first floor. For the second floor, I ordered a kit that includes breakaway screws. Basically, you screw the breakawat screw through the carpet and then break away the head. This way the head is not exposed to the carpet and the screw portion is in the floor joist. I ordered a kit from a local hardware store but I know several people who said it does wonders so I'll give it a try.
