In Response To: Workbench top (Bob)

Bob,

My favorite bench top to use is a solid core door available at most home centers. The problem is that the veneer that is on the door is soft, so you can't do heavy duty pounding or really sharp objects on it without chewing up the surface. But I'm good to my tops so that isn't a problem!:-)

You might also consider a pre-made formica counter top also available at home centers, but they are not as sturdy and may need bracing on the underside, but you get a harder surface.

Your next bet might be simply to build a stud wall frame and cover it with your favorite plywood surface.

Although my favorite bench is laminated hardwood. Sorry that I don't have a source for those... I got one years ago and have used it for all my heavy work. (I have several solid core door benches...)

Happy Hunting!!
