Marble Hearth Burn

I recently purchased a home with an approx. 1" thick piece of white marble in front of the fireplace. The marble has a few large brown spots on it which the previous owners said the spots are burns which happened when a log popped out of the fireplace. Someone had suggested making a paste out of powder cleanser and water, placing a piece of saran wrap over it, taping the sides to make it air tight, and then leaving it for a couple of days. That didn't help. Thanks in advance, Lori P
