sealing slab floors

dear handyman..l.ly

i have a home in Indy that is on a concrete slab. for the past year we have seen a large blotch in the living room carpet become a huge shadow-like stain. a carpet cleaner company came out and suggested it may be from a crack in the slab and moisture is coming through and causing a mildew stain. recommended that i take up the carpet and inspect the floor and seal it. i did so and there does not appear to be any crack, although the carpeting has a large spreading stain on the back, feels slightly dampish and has a bad odor, possibly a little like an ammonia smell, but our pets have not had any accidents there to our knowledge. should i put plastic down, replace the padding and call out the cleaners to see if he can get the stain out?? thanx, tom
