Dry weather is always better for any 'paint' type project.

For the carpet, I would simply use a drop cloth and possibly even mask the edge of the carpet with a wide masking tape if your working close to it.

Poly is a very good finish... just follow the instructions on the can and work carefully. I'm sure you will be happy with the results. Any refinish project takes a LOT of hours so take your time. Unless your getting ready to move out, there is always tomorrow to finish up. You can't rush finish work. If you do... you can tell...
