It sounds like if you can't see the screws that should be on one side or the other... that the screws must be hidden. Most of the time, there are two screws, that are simply taken out and the whole thing comes apart.

Some knob assemblies hide the screws under the trim that is against the door. There might be a small place to insert a screwdriver that will 'pop off' that trim ring, or the trim ring might unscrew (counterclockwise, although this is usually only found on commercial style door knobs)

Bottom line is.. Somebody got it on there! It comes off!;-)
