Hmmmm....

You mention bare spots. Does that mean you didn't remove all of the stain/finish from the whole top?

Refinishing a veneer can be very chalenging. Matching stains is tough too. If you took the whole top down to bare wood with sanding and still started with a surface that was a mix of stained and non-stained areas, It's unlikely that you will be able to stain to match. Final coat isn't going to help.

If the base of the table is in great shape, you might consider adding a layer of veneer to the top and getting a fresh start. If the table in general is in GREAT shape you might consider taking it to a wood refinsh shop and getting a second opinion/estimate....
