A Handyman Helping Hand

table top staining

I got a great deal on a new kitchen table. The reason it was so cheap ($20) is because the finish was bubbled in spots. I sanded the whole top with an electric orbital sander and applied stain. The veneer, which might be oak, didn't take the stain well. The bare spots are still a lot lighter than the rest of the top. I tried leaving the stain on for a half hour. I used Minwax penetrating stain after being unsuccessful with their gel stain. What do I do now? I also want to apply Minwax polyurathane.
