Masonite siding repair

I realize that there have been several class action suits involving masonite siding, but I'm interested mainly in fixing what I have. I have sheet siding on a house built in the early 80's with rotting on approx. 2-3 inches up from the bottom on some places. Are there any "fixes" I can use short of R&R the whole sheet? I've heard that a person can "mask" the problem by using a 1X4 or 1X6 and basically apply trim along side the bottom of the house and caulk well. Is this a feasible method and are there other methods?
