Pauline,

So long as you have a level spot, you only need to go down as far as you want the sand bed to be. I'm guessing that 3-4 inches should be more than enough to protect the liner and provide a soft bottom to step on. More than that might create too much 'give' when stepped in and damage the liner. The only other thing you would need to excavate for would be to create the level place. THAT is the most important part. It simply has to sit flat for long term success.
