Hi Amy,
There is a lot of stuff that you could buy to easily remove the contact paper. Once that is done make sure there is no sticky residue attached to the metal. Sand lightly then cover with paint specially formulated to cover metal. (Spray paint covers nicely but make sure you have good ventilation.) You can find them almost anywhere and in any color. You can even paint them to look like hammered metal for more of a retro look or you could sponge the paint for a softer look. Pick a theme and have fun with it! Good Luck.
