all modern dishwashers have an automatic backup protector built in, the water will not back up unless food gets stuck in the backup protector.I have never seen one installed here with an airgap all dishwashers are connected direct to the disposal.. However if you want to leave the airgap, you can always drill a new hole in the sinktop for your new equipment. Good luck
