To fix the desk. the fabric you use is canvas - which I believe is called union in the US - the glue you must use is hide glue (US) known as pearl glue in the UK. Why 'must'? because this glue will soften when wet and allows you to replace the fabric next time it wears out. Clamp the slats together, apply the glue carefully so it doesn't flow between the slats, stretch the fabric and apply. One way to make this easier is to clamp the slats under two narrow pieces of wood, apply the fabric where you can and when dry, reclamp and put fabric where you couldn't before.
