In Response To: Install disposal (Jennifer)

If you already have an electrical outlet next to the kitchen sink, then you will need a plumber to do the installation for you. If not, then you have to call an electrician to do the electrical part. The elctrician will probably have to run a new wire under the kitchen countertop and install a new switch to allow you to operate the disposal. I estimate that the electrical work will run you $180 for two hours of work and parts. This includes a service charge of about $50, depending on where you live. The rate quote is for my region. The plumber will probably charge the same amount, maybe less, for his work and materials. The disposal will cost you $79 for a 1/3 hp unit or $150 for a 3/4 hp unit. The more horsepower, the greater the grinding power. I use a 1/3 hp disposal in my sink, and it is adequate for me. Of course, if you would like to grind chicken bones, you will need a 3/4 hp unit.
