In Response To: Ceiling Fan Installation (Thomas Hilbert)

I would like to make two comments: (1) The red wire is normally live (like black) and allows you to bypass a wall switch and connect it directly to the fan. That way, you can turn the light on with the wall switch and turn the fan on with the pull-down switch. (2) Most newer fan comes with a hook on the base attachment. You hook and hang the fan motor housing to free your hands so you can work on connecting the wires. When you are done connecting and testing the wires, you unhook the motor housing and complete the installation.
