Spackling and sanding is not bad if you (1) use an electric sander with a bag to catch the dust (2) use a 24 inch flat egde to smooth the spackling compound down. The flat edge can be found in the wallpaper department. I have been using this method, and it works for me. You can nail another layer of drywalls on the existing wall if you have the time and the money. That means you will have to redo all the door frames.
