A Handyman Helping Hand

I bought a new house about 1 year ago. I am currently doing one room at a time. I am currently working in my bathroom. I have stripped all the wallpaper off and would like to paint. The problem, the walls are horrible. They told me at the hardware store that all I could do it spackle and sand. There has to be an easier way. I was hoping to find maybe a thick primer or something.
