If possible, yes. You should also have a bracket about every two feet to support your wire shelf. If you have difficulties anchoring the support brackets to the studs, consider nailing a strip of 1X4 to the wall studs. Then screw the brackets to the 1X4. Depending on the types of brackets you are using, you may have to go with a 1X6 or 1X8 board, or one pair of 1X4s properly spaced to receive the screws. Plastic anchors, when properly used, are adequate for anchoring a bracket to drywalls. Are you sure that your shelf is not overloaded? Another method to secure shelf brackets to drywall is to use molly bolts instead of plastic anchors and screws.
