Closet fell down!

I recently purchased some custom-measured materials (Closet Maid) to reorganize a closet. Included was a long (106") wire shelving unit and hanger bar. I followed the (rather inadequate) instructions, using brackets and clips at the recommended intervals, attached with the drywall anchors included with the kit. It seemed solid, but after about a week the whole rack came down! The only brackets that remained intact were those anchored to studs. I"m embarrased to say that there were only two of those--even though I had located and marked all the studs, they did not fall at the recommended intervals, and the instructions did not say anything about doing that. If I re-hang the shelf, should I make sure that I anchor them in the studs?
