A Handyman Helping Hand

electric eye

My son sleep walks, especially when it gets hot in the house and he's more restless than usual, and I was wondering if I could set up a simple electric eye accross his doorway so a light would come on when he broke the beam? I can't use a motion detector because we have a cat and other children. My son is the tallest though and I could set a beam so that everyone else would pass under it without tripping it. Is this hard? Is this feasible? Can I put the beam in his room and the light in ours? I appreciate any other ideas as well as your time regarding this one... Jeff
