Dave, You will probably have to dig deeper into the shroud where the string came out. I'm not sure whether you can just replace the string into the switch. Typically those things are not repairable. I recall trying to take one apart years ago. However, you can replace the whole string pull switch, if that's what you're talking about. You should be able to get the switch module from your local fan buying place. It would have the string and all included. Just remove the old one by screwing off the nut around the barrel and replace with the new. Make yourself a wiring diagram prior to disconnecting the old switch. The wiring should be easy.. usually the connections are w/ wire nuts. Make sure to turn off power before working.
