Karin, I would sand it a little, use a good primer and sand again. The finish coat is only going to be as good as the underlying coat. Paint with an oil base finish if you can get it. Due to E.P.A. regs it is hard to come by oil base paint, but it is the most durable for the kitchen area. Remember, preparation is the key. The finish coat will not cover imperfections, only magnify them.
