Plumb Line

I will soon be making a canopy for my bed using 6 hooks for 3, 56" tubes (using pvc). I will drape fabric over the tubes so that the fabric will hang. I have advice that in order to have the tubes hung straight I will need to use a "plumb line" to make sure all is straight and level. I get the idea, however, I am a little concerned about the "correct" use of this tool (which I have purchased). I take it that I use the bed as a guide, hang the plumb line until it drops and touches the headboard and footboard and then mark the spots where to drill the holes in the ceiling for the hooks. Yes?? Thanks.
