A Handyman Helping Hand

While tearing out an old 1940s kitchen, the drywall behind one of the cabinets crumbled apart, exposing the brick from the chimney running up the middle of the house. Before covering it, I was wondering if it was a problem leaving it exposed. Parts will be flush with new maple cabinets. Is that a fire hazard? Will I lose heat? The chimney is not for a fireplace, just the heat. Thank you!
