What is that smell?

We bought a 37-year-old house from the original owners less than a year ago. We've noticed a smell in one of the bathrooms, and it's stronger in warmer temperatures. It's kind of a cross between mildew and cat urine, but there have never been any cats in the house. I'm thinking that it might be mildew, coming from behind the wall tiles, but that's just a guess since I haven't actually been able to track down the smell.

Since I hate the wall tiles anyway, I wouldn't mind having them removed so we can see whether that's where the problem is, but my husband was hoping I'd go along with just having them glazed. Originally I said that would be okay, but now I don't want to pay for glazing and then end up having them all removed anyway and then rebuilding the walls.

Do you all think my hunch is a good possibility? As I said, I haven't been able to figure out where it's coming from, and it doesn't smell stronger in any area than in the others. Thank you!
