A Handyman Helping Hand

basement drainage

After taking all the precautions to prevent my basement walls from leaking again, and before finishing the walls,I have been told that you can cut a small trench in the floor of the basement, around the perimeter, that leads to the sump. what I've heard is that this will take any new leaks, and route them to the sump.also seeing water in the trench will be an indicator, that a leak has occured behind the wall. This sounds like something I might want to try,but what sort of cutter would you use to make this trench? How big do you make it?Is this a good idea?

Thanks Jim
