In Response To: Windows (Mathew Bauer)

Well, it's NOT as easy as just cutting a hole and popping it in! First of all, almost all communities require a permit for putting in windows where there are none presently. This requires you to get an architect or engineer to draw up plans where the window is going to go and how the forces around the window will be supported.

The basics are, you construct a temporary support to hold the load (if it's a bearing wall), you then frame out the rough opening using 2x4s and a header sized accordingly, you then cut out the sheathing after removing the siding in that area to make the opening to the outside, you then install a waterproofing liner around the opening (tar paper, plastic), you then install the window making sure its plumb, square, and level, you then put back the siding on the outside and the trim on the inside, you then sit back and enjoy.
