In Response To: ICE Dam! (Oishda)

Carolyn,

Ouch... There really isn't any way to remove ice dams from gutters/roof without risking damage...

Melting is the ultimate solution. Just a couple of thoughts..

You MIGHT be able to go into the attic and "divert" the water that is coming in with plastic sheets so it doesn't come in the house. Slim chance.. but a possibility...

And if you have rolled insulation in the attic you MIGHT be able to roll up a bunch of it, open any attic access, turning up the interior temperature of the whole home, melting off whatever is on the roof. This is all LAST RESORT sort of fixes as all would be utility intensive and would work VERY SLOWLY!

If your attic access is in the garage, you might be able to just open the door and use a high capacity heater (in a safe clear area) to "overheat" the garage allowing the heat to pass into the attic space, assisting with the melt down.

Whatever you do... THINK SAFETY!!

Thanks for stopping by,

Don
