In Response To: House Cracking Sounds (Larry Franko)

It sounds as though something is too tight. It could be the duct as it passes through wood elements, a forced bend to fit a particular area, etc. The noise occurs because of expansion of the metal duct as it heats up. Every time the furnace fires, the duct temperature rises and more expansion occurs. The only thing you can do is try and locate where the duct binds or rubs and try and give it more clearance. If this is behind drywall, you may have take the drywall down to fix it.
