It sounds as though you might have a 3-way switch. Are there any other switches that control that particular light? In the box by the light, test to see which wires are always hot, turned on by the switch, etc. If your not sure of the ID of the wires, call an electrician in to at least, trace what is what. In many cases, the new type of dimmers have a diode that blows out when it's not wired properly. If you crossed 2 different wires, it could have done that so you only get the on-off. When you wire the new switch, make sure the power to that line is off. Turn on the power only after the new switch is wired. Hope this helps.
