There's an old saying that lightening never strikes twice in the same place. Nothing could be further from the truth. I live in Middle Tennesse and I'm the chief of the local volunteer fire department. We seldom get just rain without thunder and lightening. I have a large tree in my front yard and a metal out building in the back yard that have both been hit several times. We have also had lightening hit a couple of homes in our neighborhood more than once. I don't know what attracts lightening to the same places but I do know that if you've ever been hit, you're prone to be hit again. If my situation is typical, the answer to your question is YES trees help. My poor tree looks horribly scarred and the outbuilding has several scorched spots but thank the Lord, my house has never been hit. I hope this gives you some comfort.
