A Handyman Helping Hand

I moved into a new home in Ontario, Canada and the problem I have is: every time the furnace starts up, one of the vents up to the second floor emits a cracking sound every 30 sec - 2min as it heats up and then cracks again for a little while after he furnace shuts down. The sound is actual loud enough to keep you up at night.
Question is: What would be the process to fix this for it wakes my child up in the middle of the night because it is so loud?
