Electric wiring

I am trying to install a dimmer switch and new overhead light.

I installed a dimmer switch exactly the same as the one I took out that use to work properly, green wire to ground; one dimmer black wire to black wires; one dimmer black wire to red wire; nothing attached to the white wires.

When I went to install the light I had lighting black wire to black wires, lighting green wire to ground wires; lighting white wire to white wires. That left a red wire in junction box not connected to anything.

Dimmer switch turns on but does not dim. Tried hooking white wire from light to red wire in junction box and light comes on but does not dim.

Question: What is the red wire for and why four different wire colors? What is the proper way to hook these up?
