hi,,,,,this sounds like your laundry line needs to be vented.What seems to be happenining is that as your laundry line is pumping out water, it is sucking the water out of the upstairs trap allowing sewer fumes to now go into your upstairs bedroom.All drains should be vented to prevent this from happening, but it sounds like just your washer was not vented.
