I'm a bit confused when you mentioned trusses, but I'll try to give you a general idea about what you asked. When you say wooden I-beams, I'm assuming you mean "Sturd-I-Joist or something similar. If so, then they cannot be used as a load bearing beam. They can only be used to span an area as floor joists. You would use the laminated wood beam in the application you describe.
