My experience was with old brown wood cabinets pretty much grease covered, but I would think the procedure is similar for the ones you describe. I stripped the doors and drawer fronts (may not be advisable for the material you described, perhaps you can sand and use a cleaner), and used a shellac based primer called Binz?(brand name- not sure of the spelling right now). There are others on the market(Zenser,Kilnts?), but it is a necessary step in order to keep the brown grease from bleeding through the white finish coat. After the primer, I used an oil-based enamel for the finish coat. Hope you can still find oil-based, best for durability, especially in the kitchen.
