ground wire at bathroom light fixture

Hi - I'm replacing the original light fixture in my bathroom - it's been there for 14 years. There is no box for the mounting plate - rather, there are 3 holes in the wall: 2 for toggle bolts to hold the mounting plate and the other for the wires to come through. I've discovered that the house ground wire which comes out of a white cable along with the black and white wires, has been bent & stuffed back behind the wall, and I can't tell if it's connected to anything. My question is - what do I do with the ground wire from the new fixture?? (On the fixture I'm replacing, the end of the ground wire was taped and left loose and unconnected.) Thanks VERY MUCH for your help.
