Too much temperature variation in a home can cause other problems such as cracking plaster, cracking drywall joints on the mild side, to possibly freezing pipes in the wall on the extreme side. I feel that you should never setback the thermostat more than 10 degees from your normal temperature that way, you can avoid any possible problems while still realizing a fuel savings.
