A Handyman Helping Hand

to tile or not to tile...

I recently bought an 8 year old home. The kitchen has vinyl flooring that I would like to replace with tile or slate. (All of the cabinets are white and the room is very bright so darker slate, I think, would look good.)

I mentioned this to my brother who suggested hardwoods rather than tile/slate as the foyer leading to the kitchen is hardwood, and the dining room and den, which connect on either end of the kitchen, are carpeted. His reason for not tiling is that having three different floor types is not the suggested way to do it - that you should try to keep the floor consistent rather than having so many different types coming together.

What do you think? Hardwood to keep the flow more consistent or tile/slate, because I think it would make a great looking kitchen?

Thanks!
