A Handyman Helping Hand

foul smelling water

We live in a five year old home with well water. We use a water softener. I have always noticed a faint hard-boiled egg smell when the cold water runs. Lately, it seems to becoming stronger. The Culligan man (water softener guy) came out and said pouring some bleach in the water softener would solve that. He did so. Now there is a distinct sulfur odor when the hot water is running-different than the smell of the cold water which is also still present. The water was tested about three and a half years ago for coliform (sp?) and the results were normal. I notice that my next door neighbor's cold water has a very strong smell, also. As far as the hot water smell, its been suggested that we pull the magnesium rod out of the water heater. What do you think? Can you explain what this magnesium rod does, why it would make the water smell, and whether or not we should remove it? Thanks
