Flourescent Lighting (Indoor)

I've just bought my first house on my own, so of course little things are beginning to go wrong. My bathroom has flourescent lighting, and I have never had to deal with this before. One day I went to switch the lightswitch, and the lights (2 of them in one fixture) were VERY dim, not flickering. I took one of the 2 bulbs out, thinking I'd take it to the hardware store and buy 2 new ones. So, even though one light is missing, the other still lights, dim as usual. Before I spend the time, effort and money replacing these cumbersome bulbs, I wonder if it's the bulbs at all? Does anyone have experience with this? The bulbs are still lights, even though very dim. Might the problem be with the lighting contraption itself?
