mildew

My mother's home's exterior is brick; there is an interior layer (feels like concrete under there); the interior finish is sheetrock. Last winter her ancient floor furnace, located in the center hallway of the house had to be replaced; our "handyman" suggested a small gas unit that could be wall hung. He thought setting the unit into a fireplace would be ideal; she hated the idea, but felt he "knew best". By mid winter, the walls in several rooms were damp halfway up the wall, covered in mildew.

We have since cleaned the mess away, but will have to light that unit soon.

What is causing the mildew? How do we prevent it's recurrence this winter? Is there an easier way than strong bleach and elbow grease to clean affected walls?

My mother is very distraught about having her home invaded again this season. HELP!!!!
